Orchestrating Innovation: The Orchestra Iowa Story

Learn how Orchestra Iowa turned misfortune into a catalyst to transform from a struggling orchestra to a thriving arts enterprise.

Six years ago, the then Cedar Rapids Symphony was struggling to balance a $1.5 million budget and maintain artistic standards at a time when ticket sales were declining, donations flat-lining, endowments plummeting and morale sinking. When it couldn’t get any worse, the Midwest floods of 2008 destroyed its venue, instruments, equipment and infrastructure.

"I don't want you to think of this as a flood recovery story, because while we were forced to reexamine our business models and develop new strategies, we were going to have to do that anyway. Our business, as we knew it, had stopped working, and we were failing fast... I hope our story will encourage you not to wait for the extreme to orchestrate your own innovation."

Forced to rethink what it meant to be a symphony, the organization, now rebranded as Orchestra Iowa, not only survived but through creating exceptional art, enhancing its engagement with audiences and implementing innovative business models, has transformed into a vibrant $5 million arts enterprise. Orchestra Iowa

Robert Massey began his career in the arts as a trumpeter with the Memphis Symphony while still a teenager.

He put himself through the New England Conservatory by ushering at Symphony Hall and upon graduating, joined the Boston Symphony’s development staff. Following two years with the BSO, he spent one year as a Cultural Attaché in Paris before returning to Memphis to serve as Deputy Director of the Germantown Performing Arts Centre. There, he served as architect of the Iris Orchestra—an experience that cemented his passion for bringing symphonic music to audiences everywhere.

Lauded by Arts Journal as the “Steve Jobs of the Symphony Industry,” Robert has since built a reputation as an entrepreneurial arts administrator, a visionary with a proven record of success, and a dynamic manager and motivator of boards, staffs, and musicians. He has notably tripled the revenue and doubled the audience of every orchestra he has managed, raised a collective $71 million for historic and modern building campaigns, and enhanced the cultural landscape through new creations, collaborative partnerships, and innovative business models.

Since 2008, he has been CEO of Orchestra Iowa where he has transformed the struggling $1.5 million symphony into a $5 million arts enterprise. Through his strategies, the Orchestra has increased its audience from 30,000 to 100,000 in just six years.
